London, Midland and Scottish Railway commissioned the 40-bedroom Midland Hotel which opened in July 1933. The hotel was designed by Oliver Hill in the Streamline Moderne style.

Union North were employed as architects by Urban Splash for the refurbishment and expansion of the hotel which reopened in 2008.
